First Grade
First Grade uses the Reader's and Writers workshop models in their classroom. The components of Reader’s Workshop include: shared reading, reading aloud, and independent reading. Guided reading is provided in small instructional groups. Writer’s Workshop generates writing in the following genres: Writerly Life, Narratives, Functional, Nonfiction, and Poetry. Students write everyday and focus on communication through print and writing conventions. Responsive Classroom is used to build community with a focus on developing social skills to improve academics. One component of Responsive Classroom is a daily morning meeting
that sets the tone for the day. Everyday Math content focuses on problem solving, practice of basic skills, and exploration of math concepts. Daily instruction includes hands-on manipulatives and journal work. Math homework reinforces the math concepts. Social Studies content includes home and family, change, map skills, and my world. Field trips occur throughout the year to integrate areas of study in the curriculum. First grade is paired with the drama department at Hamline University. This connection provides the children with an opportunity to experience the behind the scene workings of a play production.
